What are horizontally stretched operators?

A

MathML defines a list of horizontally stretched operators that are stretched horizontally to match the maximum width of expression placed above or below. Here are some examples:

  • Arrows: ←, → and ↔
  • Double Arrows: ⇐, ⇒ and ⇔
  • Overline and Underline: ‾ and _
  • Horizontal Parentheses: ⏜ and ⏝
  • Horizontal Brackets: ⏞, ⏟, ⎴ and ⎵
  • Tilde and Hat: ~ and ^

The example below shows 4 horizontally stretched operators:

<math><mover><mrow><mi>A</mi><mi>B</mi></mrow><mo>→</mo></mover> <mo>≠</mo>
  <munder><mrow><mi>A</mi><mi>B</mi></mrow><mo>_</mo></munder> <mo>≠</mo>
  <mover><mrow><mi>A</mi><mi>B</mi></mrow><mo>⏜</mo></mover> <mo>≠</mo>
  <munder><mrow><mi>A</mi><mi>B</mi></mrow><mo>⏟</mo></munder>
  </math>
    AB→ ≠
      AB_ ≠
      AB⏜ ≠
      AB⏟

⇒ stretchy="true|false" - Stretch Toggle

⇐ "mrow" as Virtical Stretch Boundary
