Vectors and Vector Operators"

Q

What are correct ways to represent vectors and vector operators in MathML?

A

"ISO 80000-2 Quantities and Units - Mathematics" specifies that vectors and vector operations should be represented as described below:

Vector Identifier - A vector should be identified with bold typeface or a right arrow → (U+2192, → or →) above the identifier. → should coded in <mo> tag, not in <mi> tag. For example:

<math><mi mathvariant="bold-italic">a</mi> <mo>=</mo>
  <mover><mi>a</mi><mo>→</mi></mover></math>
    v =
      v→

A vector can also be identified by its end points. For example:

<math><mi mathvariant="bold-italic">a</mi> <mo>=</mo>
  <mover><mrow><mi>A</mi><mi>B</mi></mrow><mo>→</mo></mover></math>
    v =
      AB→

Scalar Product (Dot Product) - The scalar operation of 2 vectors should be identified by the Dot symbol ⋅ (U+22C5; ⋅ or ⋅). For example:

<math><mi>s</mi> <mo>=</mo>
  <mi mathvariant="bold">u</mi><mo>⋅</mo><mi mathvariant="bold">v</mi></math>
    s =
      u⋅v

Cross Product - The cross operation of 2 vectors should be identified by the Multiplication symbol × (U+00D7, × ×). For example:

<math><mi mathvariant="bold-italic">w</mi> <mo>=</mo>
  <mi mathvariant="bold-italic">u</mi><mo>×</mo><mi mathvariant="bold-italic">v</mi></math>
    w =
      u×v
